What to Watch: Mozart's Sister
Living life well means making time for the little joys, and a great story is one of them. If you’re after something a little different for movie night, pop the kettle on and settle in for Mozart’s Sister, a beautifully made Australian documentary that’s just the right length for an evening in.
You know the name, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. But did you know he had an older sister, Maria Anna, who was every bit the musical prodigy he was? As children, the pair toured the royal courts of Europe together, dazzling kings and queens side by side. Then, once she came of age, Maria Anna was quietly left behind while her brother went on to become one of history’s most celebrated composers.
This film, part musical mystery and part detective story, goes looking for answers. Could Maria Anna have had a hand in some of her brother’s earliest, most famous work? And what became of the music she may have written herself?
“Told through expert interviews and lovely recreations, it’s a warm, thoughtful watch that sheds new light on a story many of us thought we already knew.”
Directed by acclaimed Australian filmmaker Madeleine Hetherton-Miau, Mozart’s Sister had a successful run in cinemas and picked up several award nominations, including a win for Best Music in a Feature Documentary at the AACTAs. It’s now available to stream for free on ABC iview, so no subscription required, just search “Mozart’s Sister” and you’re away.
