After moving to Lincoln Lifestyle Northern Rivers, resident Pam Birell is thriving in a new chapter of retirement filled with creativity and connection.

Embracing her passion for painting, she’s discovered not just a hobby but an award-winning pursuit.

Already a local in Gulmarrad, near Yamba and Maclean, Pam was among the first to downsize into this secure over-50s community by Lincoln Place, formerly known as Northern Rivers Lifestyle Estate.

“I was very interested when I first heard about the community being built. It was an ideal option for me, close enough to stay connected with my friends and continue the activities I love,” Pam said.

A valued member of the Lower Clarence Arts & Crafts Association and an active contributor at a nearby gallery, Pam only picked up the paintbrush in retirement and discovered her passion for art, partly inspired by the Northern Rivers landscape and environment.

“I’d always said that when I finally settled down after travelling, I’d learn to paint. And that’s exactly what I did,” she said.

“Painting has become a way of life for me. When you paint, it becomes all-consuming. You’re in your own little world. Since I began, I’ve really enjoyed using watercolours.”

Since picking up a brush, Pam has mastered both oil and watercolour techniques, recently earning first and second place awards, as well as the Grand Champion of Show, at the North Coast National Show.

Her achievements are celebrated close to home, too, with one of her paintings proudly purchased by a fellow resident to be displayed in the future Lincoln Lifestyle Northern Rivers clubhouse, set to be completed later this year.

Downsizing for Pam did not mean compromising, with her three-bedroom home doubling as her personal art studio. The spacious garage hosts her oil painting setup, complete with custom shelving and framing equipment, while the third bedroom is dedicated to her watercolours.

Beyond art, the community has brought Pam a renewed sense of connection and belonging.

“My husband has passed and my two sons live interstate, so I don’t see them often. But here, I always have company. Northern Rivers is a wonderful, friendly community that feels like family.”

Lincoln Lifestyle Northern Rivers Community Manager, Rebecca Woodleigh, said residents like Pam embodied the vibrant and connected lifestyle the over-50s community provides.

“We currently offer activities including yoga, Pilates, bowling, line dancing, pickleball, and crafting workshops which bring our residents together and promote an active lifestyle.”

“As our community continues to grow, we’re excited to expand these offerings further, and residents like Pam inspire others to try something new and get involved,” Rebecca said.

The community is growing fast, with additional homes and a clubhouse under construction and expected to be completed in late 2026, with amenities including a theatre, golf simulator, library, craft and games rooms, lounge, dining room, community kitchen and bar, gym, bocce, sauna, covered heated swimming pool, pickleball courts, BBQ pavilion and Bowling green.

The community operates under the land lease model, giving residents full ownership of their homes and any capital gains while leasing the land. There are no stamp duty costs, body corporate or exit fees, or council rates. A weekly site fee covers maintenance of the community and full access to lifestyle amenities.
