How Debbie and Kylie found friendship, connection and a place to belong

For many people, downsizing is about finding a new home.

For Debbie Hayes and Kylie Bye, it became something much more valuable: finding a community and lifelong friendships.

When Debbie relocated from Grafton, NSW, and Kylie moved from nearby Maitland, neither knew that a simple conversation while signing paperwork for their new homes at Hunter Valley Lifestyle Estate would be the start of a special friendship.

“We began chatting that day, and we clicked,” Debbie recalls.

“Now we’re inseparable. We share so much in common and laugh together all the time. Kylie really is the best neighbour I could have asked for.”

More than just a home: a community

Located in the heart of the Hunter Valley (NSW), the community offers modern, low-maintenance homes designed for over-50s who want to enjoy life with fewer responsibilities and more opportunities to connect.

For Debbie, the move represented a fresh start.

“Moving here was the best decision I’ve ever made,” she says.

“I arrived on my own, but I’ve found the most supportive community I could ask for.”

What began as a new home quickly became a welcoming neighbourhood filled with friendly faces and meaningful connections.

When neighbours become friends

For Kylie, the friendship came at exactly the right time. After losing her mother, having Debbie nearby provided comfort, support and companionship.

“Deb stepped in like family,” Kylie says. “Her support and company mean the world to me.”

Their friendship has become a natural part of everyday life.

Whether it’s shopping together, catching up around the community firepit, or simply chatting outside their homes, the pair are rarely far apart.

“We often find ourselves standing outside having a conversation and before long other neighbours join in,” Kylie laughs.

“Suddenly we’ve got our own little street gathering happening.”

A community built around connection

One of the things Debbie and Kylie value most is how easy it is to meet people and build genuine relationships.

There is always someone willing to stop for a chat, lend a hand or join in social activities.

The community’s shared spaces and facilities create opportunities for residents to connect naturally, whether through a casual conversation, a game of pickleball, a community event, or a relaxed afternoon by the pool.
